A Secondary Aid That Helps to Create Congnitive Maps for Visual Impaired Persons
نویسنده
چکیده
Mautly Pathfinder is a system designed to obtain images of the surrounding world presented to a blind person by any video camera and to manage those images to obtain only the significant information for the user such as the shape, size, position and relative movements of possible hazards. This information is transmitted to the user by a vibrating matrix located on the abdominal region of the body. Furthermore, pulses in which frequency varies depending on distance between such hazards and the user are sent to a vibrating interface located on the chest of the impaired person. The purpose is to give enough information to the user to create a cognitive map of the local environment. The system is designed to be wearable and to work at real time, which means that the data processing and the results delivering of such information are done almost instantly.

متن کاملDesign and evaluation of auditory spatial cues for decision making within a game environment for persons with visual impairments
An audio platform game was created and evaluated in order to answer the question of whether or not an audio game could be designed that effectively conveys the spatial information necessary for persons with visual impairments to successfully navigate the game levels and respond to audio cues in time to avoid obstacles. The game used several types of audio cues (sounds and speech) to convey the ...
متن کاملThe Role of Auditory Cues in the Spatial Knowledge of Blind Individuals
The study presented here sought to explore the role of auditory cues in the spatial knowledge of blind individuals by examining the relation between the perceived auditory cues and the landscape of a given area and by investigating how blind individuals use auditory cues to create cognitive maps. The findings reveal that several auditory cues characterize the study area and are linked to a numb...

Most blind users frequently need help when visiting unknown places. While the white cane or guide dog can aid the users in their mobility, the major difficulties arise in orientation. The lack of both reference points and visual cues are the main causes. Despite extensive research in orientation interfaces for the blind, their guiding instructions are not aligned with the users’ needs and langu...
